Most manufacturers offer three sizes of dozers – small, medium, and large. In this blog we will dive into the details of each and then try to help you find what is best for your specific job.
Small Bulldozers
Sometimes called mini dozers, small bulldozers are great for small jobs like residential projects or working in tight places. These machines have a horsepower rating under 100 hp and weigh up to 10 tons. They are tracked machines, which means they work well on soft terrain.
Projects for small dozers include small construction projects (light earthmoving), residential projects (constructing a driveway or moving dirt for landscaping), fine finishing and grading, and anything on soft terrain.
Caterpillar manufactures the following small dozers: D1 (75hp), D2 (85hp), and D3 (100hp). Komatsu produces small dozers (D37, D39, and D51) that range from 89 to 131 hp.
Medium Bulldozers
These machines fall into the middle of the spectrum and are the perfect balance between size, fuel efficiency, and power. These machines generate between 100 and 250 horsepower and weigh between 10 and 50 tons.
Projects for medium dozers include larger residential projects (landscaping), small-to-medium-sized demolition and land-clearing projects, and small-to-medium-sized industrial construction projects.
Caterpillar manufacturer the D4 (125hp), D5 (160hp), D6 (200hp), and D7 (240hp). Komatsu produce the D61, D65, and D71 ranging from 168hp to 237hp.
Large Bulldozers
These are the big boys that get all the views on YouTube. These beasts are used in large industrial environments, like highway construction and mining projects. Large dozers generate over 250 horsepower and are ideal for large industrial and highway construction projects. They weigh more than 50 tons.
Projects for large dozers include projects on rough terrain, projects in harsh environmental settings, highway construction, and mining.
Caterpillar manufacture D8 (320hp), D9 (405hp), D10 (600hp) and D11 (850hp). Komatsu and large dozers (D85 and D115) ranging from 264hp to 354hp.
How To Choose the Right Bulldozer Size
Here are the main considerations to keep in mind:
Project: Small dozers are typically best for light commercial and residential construction projects, large dozers are good for large-scale construction and infrastructure, and medium dozers fall in the middle.
Terrain: This aligns with the project type and location. Depending on the terrain (rocky, soft soil, etc.) and weather conditions, you’ll need to pick the right dozer with tracks or wheels. Tracks are great for uneven terrain and wet, muddy locations; wheels are best for flat earth.
Operator experience: Having the right experience level behind the wheel is crucial. The required skill level increases with the size of each dozer.
