How To Stay Safe when Operating Heavy Equipment

Updated: Mar 21

Any site on which heavy equipment is stored or operated is inherently dangerous on account of the pure size and weight of the equipment. Regardless of whether you are in plant hire, construction, mining, or any business related to heavy machinery and parts, you need to implement a strict safety policy when it comes to personal protective equipment (PPE) that should be adhered to at all times.

Here are all the points that you want to cover.

  • Hardhat and high-visibility clothing to be worn when not inside the cab. The construction industry has the highest rate of job-related injuries and fatalities, but visibility helps to increase worker safety. Some of the greatest threats to construction worker safety are transportation accidents and slips, trips, and falls. Both of these can be mitigated to some extent with high visibility clothing. Workers with hi-vis vests are more easily seen in poor weather conditions such as rain or snow. Increasing their visibility also makes industrial workers, first responders, and fire rescue personnel more visible to one another and people in emergency situations.

  • Safety Boots are one of the most important elements of personal safety. Construction and industrial sites are hazardous workplaces, posing a high risk of foot injuries. Injuries may occur due to objects like stones and sharp nails piercing through work shoes, falling of heavy objects on the feet, careless use of heavy-duty construction equipment and vehicles, sprains and fractures due to slips and falls and electric shocks

  • Eye protection must be worn where there is the danger of falling or flying debris from equipment or loads, especially in windy conditions. Eyeshields, also called safety glasses, goggles, or spectacles, not only provide protection against flying debris and chemical splashes but may also protect against visible and near-visible light or radiation from UV rays, depending on the lens material.

  • Hand protection is a very important part of workplace safety. Safety gloves are offered in many different types of protective materials. You will need metal mesh gloves for sharp objects and cables, leather for rough surfaces, vinyl and neoprene for toxic chemicals, and rubber for electricity.

  • Hearing protection must be worn when exposed to high noise levels. There are four kinds of hearing protection devices: pre-molded earplugs (they come in different sizes and shapes to fit different sized ear canals); formable or foam earplugs (when placed in the ear correctly, this type of earplug, will expand to fill the ear canal and seal against the walls); ear muffs (these devices fit against the head and enclose the entire perimeter of the external ear); hearing bands or canal caps (these devices cover the ear canal at its opening. They do not provide as much of a seal inside the ear canal and generally provide less protection than ear muffs or plugs, so they are typically not recommended).

Stay safe on the worksite.
