Every farm should have at least one excavator. Here are four ways that modern farmers are using excavators.
1. Land Clearing
In the old days, farmers used axes and spades top clear land which involved an inefficient deployment of human capital. Another way to clear land is through the deployment of animal capital – farm animals like pigs will eat everything in sight but this takes time. With an excavator, one operator is able to clear a substantial amount of land of superficial debris, in addition to deep rooted stumps and trees.
2. Road Making
Quick and efficient access to land tracts is the cornerstone of efficient farming. Well-constructed roads facilitate the planting, maintenance and harvesting of crops. Outsourcing road building to a third party is not optimal because no one knows the farm and terrain better that the farmer. A farmer who has the equipment to clear, dig, and level roads can dramatically improve their efficiency.
3. Water Management
As water becomes a scarcer resource, the maintenance of efficient water supply has become more important. Excavators allow a farmer to dig trenches to help lay down sewage or water supply lines. They can also be used to build dams.
4. Digging and Loading
Farmers often need to move sand, debris and rubble. This may be due to demolishing old structures or the need to put up new structures. An excavator with the correct attachments is far more efficient than a team of manual laborers.
Most farmers rely on plant hire companies to rent machines by the day or week. Another option is to acquire a low hour second hand machine and finance it through a financial intermediary so they do not tie up much precious working capital. There are plenty of great second-hand machines out there that would help farmers acquire this vital asset.
